Program

Communism Peak is the highest peak on the territory of former USSR; very impressive and well-known one, that is located in the Northern-West part of Pamir. The peak was discovered in 1928, during Soviet-German scientific expedition and at first till 1962 was called Stalin peak, then it was renamed as Communism Peak. In 1999 when Tajikistan became an independent state it was renamed again as Ismail Somoni peak, in honour of the founder of the first state of Tajiks (in X century). The mountain's name has an interesting and very politized history.

Historical information

In 1933 the Soviet Academy of Science organized the large Tajik-Pamir Expedition where 215 members on the scientific side were accompanied by nearly 400 assistants workers, porters etc. Both the scientific and the sporting goals were fulfilled by the expedition.


Tactics of ascent

There are more then 30 routes that lead to the top of Communism Peak. Out of them, most difficult is the one that starts from Beljaev Glacier and goes along steep (gradient over 80 degrees steep) 2000 m long rocky wall. The easiest route starts from the Bivachny Glacier. Classic route starts from the Walter Glacier and goes up along the so called "Borodkin Ridge".

The international mountaineering camp "Alp - Navruz" is situated on Moskvina glade (between the glaciers of Moskvina and Valter at the foot of Vorobjev peak) at the height of 4200m. over sea level; on eastern bank terrace, on eastern glaciers of “Valter” and” Moskvina”
